I had to get to school a bit early this morning, and figuring I would be able to get to KP before the spots filled up, I drove to KP to take the 75.
I got there a bit before 7:15, and there were only FOUR spots out of the available 45 left.
I missed a bus to watch how quickly these last remaining parking oasis went, and, had I been there a couple minutes later, I wouldn't have been able to park.
This means that these 45 spots fill up before 7:15AM. For these people, if there are any students here at all, this means they are getting to school by 8, or even before 8. This is a tiny fraction of the student population that likes to arrive early.
This also means that anybody wishing to get to school for an 8:30 class, or a 9:30, 10:30, and even 11:30, are shit out of luck.
Let's pause for a moment and consider how many students attend their first class at either 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, or 11:30 in the morning.
...
Yeah. Well no fucking wonder there were hundreds of cars in the KP parking lot by 8:30 or 9Am.
I have no idea if Transit will do anything about this. The most I have gotten from them is that they were thankful for my suggestions and that they were going to talk with other businesses in the area, but that they didn't expect positive responses because Transit had asked these same businesses in the past and gotten "no's."
But really what a wasted potential this P&R lot is. Potentially hundreds of students per day taking the bus, paying fares, buying bus passes.
If even a handful of these students become regular transit users after their school days, wouldn't that made it worth Transit's effort to expand this lot?

That's too bad about the parking lot. The general parking lot on campus that I use is about 40% full by 9am and by 11am people who look for space is SOL. We have about 10 big general parking lots on campus but it's still not enough. Times like these when I miss living on campus and being able to walk to class.
